This week my new kiln arrived at last. I have been waiting a very long time for this moment!! My kiln has been in bad shape for some time. When I bought it, it was damaged in it’s first delivery. Dropped from the lorry….therefore lots of the fire bricks were broken… and it was for sale for half price! Fantastic I thought!
It has done me well for the last 15 years or so but now the fire bricks which had been patched together are crumbling, the roof bricks is sagging, pieces occasionally fall onto my pots, the groove where the elements sit are all broken so the elements sag and bend causing them to break more often etc…. I have worked around these problems for years! The time came in January to make the move and buy a new kiln. I then applied for some funding towards it which unfortunately I was unsuccessful in being awarded, so I had to take out a loan… which certainly focuses the mind! This enabled me to order a new kiln and buy a second hand wheel so I can now teach 2 people together, this will repay my loan.

my NEW KILN
My kiln is now in place, the old one taken away! I have not fired it yet but will do the first firing next week. It will take a while to get used to it as being a new kiln and controller it is very accurate, meaning I have had to adjust my firing program.
